May, seems to be a reproduction of Shelley’s Frankenstein. Bearing the original themes of the monster itself. Grappling with hatred and vengeance for its creator and unleashing it to the ones he loves just because he is denied a mate. May, being the creator is subjected to the vengeance of her doll Suzie up until a point where she becomes Suzie. From, what seems to be a thriller plays around with the horrors one is capable of when they break, or for May’s case, when her glass breaks.
May, being born with Lazy eye, is raised to hide her imperfections. Her mother was a perfectionist and paid very close detail to everything around her. This perfectionism affects May herself as we can see with her own fixation with body parts that she deems “perfect”. May, thanks to her physical “deformity” makes it difficult for her to make friends. Her mother doesn’t exactly encourage her in making friends but instead hands her a doll, Suzie, to be her friend. “If you can’t find a friend, make one” was what said to her after the incident in school that made her realize that she would be unable to make friends. This statement from the mother is carried by May until the end of the film.
Fast forward, we see an adult May, and we see that she has taken an interest in a boy. It is mentioned that she has liked guys before, but this one is different. This time she is sure to want to try to make some sort of connection with him. May’s need for a connection, an attachment becomes the other in the film. Suzie, being her only friend becomes and embodiment of this. At this point, the need is stronger but she ignores Suzie because Suzie is just a doll. And so, she goes forth and tries to make connections. She attempts to do so with the boy, and her co-worker, and even with some random guy later.
May, has her own sexual wants, and much like Frankentein, she wants a mate. She identifies this mate as the boy at first, and later with her co-worker with both rejecting her the opportunity of having a mate. And like Frankenstein, she flips out and seeks revenge. The entire time that May was trying to make friends, Suzie, was being repressed. May kept repressing Suzie to the point of breakage. This breakage also signified the sanity of May. Now that she can no longer contain the long desire of wanting connection she hits the point of insanity. She embodies Suzie by dressing like her for Halloween and goes on her killing spree. May acting out her mother’s original statement sets out to make her mate. This is where it differs from the Frankenstein story. In the original Frankenstein, the story ends with Frankenstein dying and the monster walking away into the darkness. In this one we see May, creating something new, and it works. This is somewhat a happy ending for May. The new creation is named Amy. Amy being a play of May symbolizes the separation from May, while still acknowledging that it is of her origin. Much like how the Frankenstein monster is. We identify the Frankenstein monster as Frankenstein, yet it is a separate entity to him.
Going back to May’s other, the other was suspended for a time being under the illusion that May was finally getting what she has always wanted, human connections. Suzie, despite being a doll, is still May, she is a projection of her inner desires, twisted but true to who May is. May’s fear of making connections is brought to life when Suzie gives her bad advice. This creates a paradox where May wants but at the same time doesn’t want to make human connections. It is to her forbidden, especially since nothing meets the criteria of perfection. In the end, May is satisfied, only wanting her creation to see her, for someone to see her. She needed company, and the only company she could gain was that which she made. This company was made from vengeance, self-sacrifice (her eye), and a bit of her identity. Which brings me back to Frankenstein, only a different one. This Frankenstein is the tragic version, innocent, and only acting out because of how the world makes her out to be.
May, is confusing, and plays with creation and recreation. She has created a lot of dolls, and has recreated herself to fit whom she would want to make a connection with. Not exactly fitting perfectly with these people, she tailor fits them to her needs. She creates her Frankenstein, being one herself.
